In the first month of 960 AD, the snow in Kaifeng City had not yet melted. Empress Dowager Fu, who was in her early twenties, held the seven-year-old Emperor Gong of Later Zhou, Chai Zongxun, in her arms. This widowed couple presided over a shaky country. At this moment, the urgent news of the "Khitan invasion from the south" in the northern border pushed the commander of the imperial army, Zhao Kuangyin, to the forefront of history. When the army reached Chenqiaoyi, a "yellow robe" was put on, which became the last dynasty change of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms, and also left a confusing topic in Chinese history.

The picture depicted in the History of Song Dynasty is full of fatalism: the soldiers knocked on the military tent at night, and Zhao Kuangyin was forced to wear a yellow robe on the grounds of "the young ruler and the country are in doubt". Zhao Kuangyin woke up from his drunkenness but was "forced" to follow the will of the army. When Zhao Kuangyin returned to the court, the prime ministers Fan Zhi and Wang Pu rushed to send the generals out of regret, and their nails were pinched into their palms. After all, why did the prophecy of "the inspector will become the emperor" spread throughout the capital before the expedition? Where did the yellow robe that symbolizes the will of heaven come from? However, at a banquet ten years later, Zhao Kuangyin "released military power with a cup of wine" to end the cycle of warlord chaos since the end of the Tang Dynasty, and rebuilt political ethics with the ancestral precept of "not killing scholars and officials". His "soft treatment" of the royal family of Chaizhou after he ascended the throne also revealed his political wisdom that transcended opportunities.

Perhaps, the dawn commotion at Chenqiaoyi is a question about the eternal nature of human nature: In an era of disorganized order, where is the line between personal ambition and responsibility for one’s country? And when we judge historical figures today, how should we balance morality and reality?

At 2:00 pm on July 26, 2015, Professor Li Yifeng will lead everyone back to Chenqiaoyi on the third day of the first lunar month of that year. By comparing the original historical materials with the judgments of historians, he will deconstruct the political myth of wearing the yellow robe and explore this critical day that may have changed the direction of China for the next thousand years. Between the heroic historical view and conspiracy theory, we may find a third path to understand the complexity of historical truth - because true historical wisdom has always been born from doubts about certainty.
