Mr. Lu Simian (1884-1957) was an important historian and educator in modern China. He was rigorous in his academic research and read the Twenty-Four Histories many times, but he was not satisfied with the Qianlong and Jiaqing textual research, but was committed to integrating it into his own thinking. He advocated that learning should be combined with reality and opposed academic pursuit for the sake of academic pursuit. However, he stayed away from politics and lived a simple life. He once said: "In conducting myself, I always take the ancient sages and scholars as my role models", but he also said that he was "deeply convinced" of Marxism-Leninism. However, it is well known that Mr. Lu is diligent and honest in his studies and is undoubtedly a scholar with his own unique ideas. Therefore, these seemingly tortuous thoughts and attitudes mentioned above actually reflect a specific context of the times and also demonstrate a transcendent life type.

Volume 25 of the Complete Works of Lü Simian compiles five popular works written by Mr. Lü in his early years: *A Brief History of the Three Kingdoms*, *Su Qin and Zhang Yi*, *A Joint Biography of Guan Yu and Yue Fei*, *A Brief History of National Humiliation*, and *The General Trend of Chinese Geography*. Although these works are popular, they actually contain a historian's profound anxieties and conscious efforts amidst the great changes of the times. Mr. Lü's scholarship was always rigorous and meticulous; why then did he devote so much effort to writing these works in addition to his writings and teaching? This may be a key path for us to enter his intellectual world and his era.

In these five seemingly casual books written for the general public, Mr. Lü discusses the Three Kingdoms and Warring States periods, analyzes the deeds of Guan Yu and Yue Fei, recounts national humiliations and geography, but his concerns extend far beyond the past. He is truly responding to the pressing predicament of Chinese society at the time: errors in knowledge and history, ignorance of diplomacy and strategy, blind worship of heroes, numbness to one's own situation, and alienation from the land beneath one's feet. With the rigor of a historian, he transforms these profound issues into accessible language. We can observe how a serious scholar transforms his scholarship into profound meaning through storytelling. We can read his tireless corrections, his incisive critique of political habits, his appeal for rational thought, and, most importantly, his earnest desire to awaken national consciousness.

On January 24th, 2016, at the Sushulou Lecture Hall, we invited everyone to read these five short books with Professor Fu Kechang. Through them, we returned to that era of both crisis and opportunity, and understood how Mr. Lü Simian used his pen as a lamp to practice his ambition of historical scholarship in popular writing. His achievements in guiding correct historical understanding through popularization and inspiring contemporary reflection through historical events remain a valuable and powerful reference for us today who are still thinking about the meaning of history and concerned about social realities.
