\nMr. Lu Simian (1884-1957) was an important historian and educator in modern China. He was rigorous in his academic research and read the Twenty-Four Histories many times, but he was not satisfied with the Qianlong and Jiaqing textual research, but was committed to integrating it into his own thinking. He advocated that learning should be combined with reality and opposed academic pursuit for the sake of academic pursuit. However, he stayed away from politics and lived a simple life. He once said: "In conducting myself, I always take the ancient sages and scholars as my role models", but he also said that he was "deeply convinced" of Marxism-Leninism. However, it is well known that Mr. Lu is diligent and honest in his studies and is undoubtedly a scholar with his own unique ideas. Therefore, these seemingly tortuous thoughts and attitudes mentioned above actually reflect a specific context of the times and also demonstrate a transcendent life type.

\nVolume 18 of the Complete Works of L\u00fc Simian collects six works on historical texts and historiographical methods. These concise and mutually reinforcing works range from lecture notes to classroom handouts, reference books, and textbooks: "Historical Texts and Historiography," "Historical Research Methods," "Selected Annotations to the New Book of Tang," "Critiques of Selected Historical Texts," "Selected Biographies of Ancient Historians," and "How to Read Chinese Historical Texts."

\nFor students of history, these six works are imbued with Mr. Lu's meticulous work and his personally refined insights into the joys and sorrows of history. From cultivating a sense of problem-solving, comparing and interpreting materials, to understanding the art of reading historical texts, they can be described as a "scholarly approach." But for a wider audience, these works also touch upon topics that continue to resonate in public debate today. Mr. Lu addressed questions like "Why study history?" "What is the purpose of historiography?" and "What were the shortcomings of traditional history?" His answers, even today, sparkle with thought-provoking brilliance.

\nEqually captivating is the way these writings sometimes reveal the distinctive qualities of Mr. Lu's scholarly thought. For example, his dismissal of the Hongmen Banquet as a "fictional fabrication" reveals his challenging and skeptical spirit. On the other hand, he also points out that modern doubts about the existence of the "Longzhong Plan" are simply frivolous, demonstrating his caution and respect in his assessment of the ancients. For Mr. Lu, the meaning of "narrative," "textual research," and "historical insight," as well as how to discern historical truth between the lines, are all central to his understanding of the concepts of narrative, textual research, and historical insight. In these works, he expresses his unwavering integrity, a skill worthy of our careful appreciation.

\nOn October 25, 2015, we invite you to join Professor Fu Kechang in a lecture on these six works, exploring Mr. Lu's philosophy of history and historiographical methods. We will see how he interacted with a transformative era. Through his careful reading of historical texts and reflection on his methods, he developed a historiography that combines skepticism with sincerity, criticism with constructiveness. At a time when historical narratives are increasingly under scrutiny and under intense scrutiny, Mr. Lu's scholarly path may offer a valuable reflection on our own situation.
