📖【Special Lecture by Invitation】Special public lecture on the 34th anniversary of Mr. Qian Mu’s death and campus promotion of Qian Mu’s former residence: “How to understand Mr. Qian Mu’s research on Chinese political history?”, Professor Wang Yuanyi, October 26, 113
In 1932, when the summer vacation at Peking University was coming to an end, the History Department finally reluctantly agreed to allow Mr. Qian Mu to offer a course on "History of China's Political System." At that time, the person in charge believed that China since the Qin Dynasty was nothing more than an autocratic monarchy. Since the Republic of China era had come, there was no need to discuss the past political system. However, Mr. Qian holds a different view. He maintains that even if this is true, people who study history should still have an understanding of how authoritarian politics was in the past.
When the semester started, unexpectedly, the classroom of the School of Liberal Arts was filled with a large number of students from the Law School, and students from the History Department became observers. It turned out that the teachers and students of the law school felt that the content they studied at school tended to focus on Western legal systems. In order to have a more comprehensive understanding of their political origins, they came to choose courses one after another, which became a unique autumn scene on the campus that year.

2024 is the thirty-fourth anniversary of the death of Mr. Qian Mu. In order to commemorate the good stories of the cross-department lectures and rethink the challenges and changes in contemporary politics and culture, Qian Mu’s former residence is honored to invite Professor Wang Yuanyi from the Department of History of National Taiwan University to speak on "How to Understand Qian Mu" "Mr. Qian Mu's Research on Chinese Political History" was the title of "The 34th Anniversary of the Death of Mr. Qian Mu and the Special Invited Public Lecture on the Campus Promotion of Qian Mu's Former Residence".
Mr. Qian has always believed that "politics" should be understood from the overall historical and cultural context. The creation and destruction of any system or personnel will have its changes, gains and losses. When judging the meaning and effectiveness of "politics," we should seek answers from its historical context and cultural background, rather than making assumptions that span the ages. Today, the lectures of that semester are more than 90 years ago - looking back today, we can't help but reflect on whether Mr. Qian's words are still inspiring and meaningful, and how is our knowledge different from that of people 90 years ago? ?
The era and world we live in can be described as troubled. On this occasion, Qian Mu’s Former Residence sincerely invites all friends to come to Taipei City University at 10 a.m. on October 26 (Saturday). With Professor Wang, we will have an in-depth discussion of Mr. Qian Mu’s core views in the study of Chinese political history and clarify the basis of his thoughts. They reflect on each other’s ways of imagining and understanding politics, and then examine the challenges and opportunities faced by traditional thought and contemporary society.
All colleagues of Qian Mu's former residence
Yours sincerely
