📚【Announcement from Su Shulou. Fine-tuning of lecture topics] "Lecture Hall at Sushulou, Qian Mu's Former Residence" - Cultural Reading Series: "Reading Lu Simian: Introduction to "Introduction to Chinese Studies"", teacher Fu Kechang, October 26, 113
💡Hello, dear friends from my former home! I would like to report to all my friends that the topic of this lecture originally scheduled for October 26 will be slightly adjusted. The original topic of the lecture [Introduction to the "Outline of Neo-Confucianism"] has been changed to "Introduction to the "Introduction to Chinese Studies"" in response to the event schedule. [Introduction to the "Outline of Science"] has been postponed to next month's course. We look forward to sharing the exciting content with all our friends by then! 💡
Mr. Lu Simian (1884-1957) was an important historian and educator in modern China. He is rigorous in his studies and has read the Twenty-Four Histories many times, but he is not satisfied with the textual research of Qianjia and Jia, but is committed to mastering them. He advocated that learning should be combined with reality, and opposed learning for the sake of learning, but he stayed away from politics and remained indifferent all his life. He once stated: "I have set up my own life and always follow the ancient sages and bureaucrats as a model", but he also said that he "deeply admires" Marxism-Leninism. However, as we all know, Mr. Lu is undoubtedly a scholar who is recognized as diligent, honest and well-known. Therefore, these seemingly tortuous thinking and attitudes above actually not only reflect a specific context of the times, but also demonstrate a transcendent life model.
"Introduction to Chinese Studies" was originally a lecture note given by Mr. Lu Simian. From 1942 to 1943, because he was unwilling to surrender to the Japanese army, Mr. Lu moved to Qingyun Middle School in rural Changzhou to teach. One of the courses he taught was "Introduction to Chinese Studies." Later, historian Mr. Huang Yongnian (1925-2007), who was a sophomore in high school, compiled his class notes into a book and published it in 2008.
Mr. Huang recalled: "For example, the Buddhist part of "Introduction to Chinese Studies" was originally the most difficult to teach and understand, not to mention that the lecturer was a high school student with no knowledge of philosophy, but he took his time and only spent three hours on it. He clearly explained the basic teachings of Mahayana and Mahayana Buddhism, and the theoretical similarities, differences, and pros and cons of the main sects of Chinese Buddhism such as Faxiang Sect, Tiantai Sect, Huayan Sect, Pure Land Sect, and Zen Sect, which made it interesting to listen to and not difficult to understand at all. . This is not achieved by eloquence, but by truly critical study of important scriptures and treatises.”
At that time, Mr. Huang Yongnian was attracted by Mr. Lu's knowledge, so he specially applied for admission to Qingyun Middle School. He said that he took detailed notes on all the four courses taught by Mr. Lu. Not only did he not miss every word on the blackboard, he also recorded the oral content as much as possible. The lectures were simple, clean and fascinating, which made him sigh, "Listen to Mr. Lu's lectures." The class is simply a kind of intellectual enjoyment." This book is now included in 16 volumes of "Complete Works". Although the entire manuscript is brief, it can give a glimpse of Mr. Lu's teaching style. It is also worthy of comparison and review with Mr. Qian Mu's book of the same name. At 14:00 pm on October 26, 2013, we invite everyone to read with Mr. Fu Kechang to see Mr. Lu’s analysis of the nature and origin of Chinese academics, and how old students can still recall it like yesterday after forty years. Wonderful class.
