Mr. Lu Simian (1884-1957) was an important historian and educator in modern China. He is rigorous in his studies and has read the Twenty-Four Histories many times, but he is not satisfied with the textual research of Qianjia and Jia, but is committed to mastering them. He advocated that learning should be combined with reality, and opposed learning for the sake of learning, but he stayed away from politics and remained indifferent all his life. He once stated: "I have set up my own life and always follow the ancient sages and bureaucrats as a model", but he also said that he "deeply admires" Marxism-Leninism. However, as we all know, Mr. Lu is undoubtedly a scholar who is recognized as diligent, honest and well-known. Therefore, these seemingly tortuous thinking and attitudes above actually not only reflect a specific context of the times, but also demonstrate a transcendent life model.
In 1941, with the outbreak of the Pacific War, the Japanese army invaded the Shanghai Concession. President Zhang Shouyong of Guanghua University refused to register with the Japanese authorities and resolutely stopped enrolling students in Shanghai. Mr. Lu also returned to his hometown in Changzhou to teach and read writings. "History of the Two Jin and Southern and Northern Dynasties" was written during this difficult period and was first published by Shanghai Kaiming Bookstore in October 1948. Among Mr. Lu's four chronological histories, this one is the largest, reaching almost two million words. In the book's twenty-four eloquent chapters, Mr. Lu methodically describes the rise and fall of politics, family succession, social customs, economics, industry, and religion and academics during this chaotic three hundred years. Mr. Lu later commented on this book, saying that "the general summary is worth reading. In addition, he discovered the forgery and cover-up of Wei history; he wrote against Wei Yimin; he wrote about Chen Wu; he examined prices, wages, and assets; and he discussed the electoral system. All of them are good." During the Wuhu period, the intention was to stimulate nationalism, but it was slightly out of control because it was done unconsciously when the Japanese aggressors invaded. We should correct it when there is an opportunity in the future."
