Mr. Lu Simian (1884-1957) was an important historian and educator in modern China. He is rigorous in his studies and has read the Twenty-Four Histories many times, but he is not satisfied with the textual research of Qianjia and Jia, but is committed to mastering them. He advocated that learning should be combined with reality, and opposed learning for the sake of learning, but he stayed away from politics and remained indifferent all his life. He once stated: "I have set up my own life and always follow the ancient sages and bureaucrats as a model", but he also said that he "deeply admires" Marxism-Leninism. However, as we all know, Mr. Lu is undoubtedly a scholar who is recognized as diligent, honest and well-known. Therefore, these seemingly tortuous thinking and attitudes above actually not only reflect a specific context of the times, but also demonstrate a transcendent life model.
"It is extremely difficult to describe what culture is. It is not easy to trace the origin of culture and understand why it is so. What we call culture is the achievement of human rationality. People's actions will be fruitful if they are carried out with direct emotion; if they are thoughtful and careful, they will There are also many examples. Actions are not accidental, and the results must be visible. If one person does it, everyone will follow it, and if ten thousand people follow it, it will not be surpassed by future generations. Over time, it will become a system, and it will not be a habit. Changes, and its traces cannot be destroyed. This is the so-called cultural history"...
This piece of classical Chinese writing by Mr. Lu Simian explains in a concise and concise manner what "cultural history" is. When Mr. Lu was teaching at Jiangsu Provincial Changzhou Middle School from 1929 to 1930, he planned to compile "Twenty Lectures on the History of Chinese Culture". Unfortunately, only six mimeographed versions of the lectures remained, which were later edited and published in 1997. In addition, Mr. Lu also taught at Changzhou Qingyun Middle School from 1942 to 1943. His high school sophomore student and historian Mr. Huang Yongnian later compiled the class notes of that year into a manuscript. Today, both manuscripts are included in the 15th volume of "The Complete Works of Lu Simian", and the deleted contents are restored. The titles of the books are "Six Lectures on the History of Chinese Culture" and "History of Chinese Culture" respectively, with an appendix of Mr. Huang Yongnian's Preface to the prose "Recalling My Teacher Mr. Lu Chengzhi (Si Mian)".
According to Mr. Huang Yongnian's recollection, Mr. Lu's discussion of Chinese cultural history is "a comprehensive historical narrative that includes social class, economic conditions, living habits, political systems, and even academic and religious aspects." At 14:00 on June 22, 113, we invite everyone to come to Qian Mu’s former residence to study together. Teacher Fu Kechang will comprehensively introduce these two works to see how Mr. Lu Simian manages "cultural history" with his extensive knowledge and carefulness. This is an all-encompassing and multifaceted study.
