"The Biography of Boyi" is the first chapter of the "Biography" in the Historical Records. It describes the brothers Boyi and Shuqi who fled the country and dissuaded King Wu of Zhou from attacking Zhou. For two thousand years, this text has caused people to admire and debate endlessly. On the one hand, the writing of this article is magnificent and vivid, "like the Yangtze River, the winds and waves overlap at the front and back, and there is a clear lake of several hectares in the middle, with waves as flat as black and white, which is surprising" (Qing Dynasty. Wu Jiansi, "Historical Records Essay"). On the other hand, as Qian Zhongshu said: "This article records very little of the actions of the Yi Qi, and the majority of the comments are lamentations. The guest of counter-arguments is the main subject of the biography." ("Guan Zhui").
There is no doubt that this "emotional discussion" with "overlapping storms" is the thought-provoking and wonderful thing left by Tai Shigong. "The Biography of Boyi" has a strong ideological nature and involves a wide range of humanistic thinking. In the dialectic between human affairs and heaven, Taishi Gong placed his intention to write history in it. When Sima Qian narrated this story, he expressed his views on history and even the way of heaven, as well as his deep reflection on traditional values. Later generations followed the eternal questions he raised, trying to understand Tai Shigong's intentions, thinking in cycles and giving their own answers. Therefore, although this biography is short, its meaning can be elaborated endlessly.

In the first lecture of the new year, read "The Biography of Boyi" with teacher Jiang Yitai, and think about it in Tai Shigong's polished pen and ink.
