Mr. Lu Simian (1884-1957) was an important historian and educator in modern China. He is rigorous in his studies and has read the Twenty-Four Histories many times, but he is not satisfied with the textual research of Qianjia and Jia, but is committed to mastering them. He advocated that learning should be combined with reality, and opposed learning for the sake of learning, but he stayed away from politics and remained indifferent all his life. He once stated: "I have set up my own life and always follow the ancient sages and bureaucrats as a model", but he also said that he "deeply admires" Marxism-Leninism. However, as we all know, Mr. Lu is undoubtedly a scholar who is recognized as diligent, honest and well-known. Therefore, these seemingly tortuous thinking and attitudes above actually not only reflect a specific context of the times, but also demonstrate a transcendent life model.
"History of the Sui, Tang and Five Dynasties" is the fourth book in Mr. Lu Simian's series of Chinese chronological history. Mr. Lu Simian said that this book was the slowest one he wrote. The writing of this book began around August 1947 and was completed in the second half of 1953. However, when Mr. Lu died of illness in 1957, the revision of the manuscript had not yet been completed. The final manuscript was published by Zhonghua Book Company in the first edition in September 1959, and was greatly edited. In the 1980s, Messrs. Yang Kuan and Lu Yiren edited and revised it. In recent years, Messrs. Li Yongqi and Zhang Genghua proofread and completed the previously deleted content, and finally compiled it into the complete collection.
In the preface to the book, Mr. Wang wrote: "The history of China is not just the history of China. The rise and fall of the countries in the East are inexhaustible. Even the changes in the overall situation of the world are also closely related... (omitted)... East and West The alternation of national dynamism was real in the Tang Dynasty, and those who read the history of the Sui, Tang, and Five Dynasties must also know this meaning." This gives us a glimpse of the intention of Mr. Wang's book "History of the Sui, Tang, and Five Dynasties". This book is, as always, divided into two parts. The upper part narrates the rise and fall of politics in chronological order, while the lower part discusses various social conditions such as ethnicity, industry, academia, and religion.
Mr. Lu originally planned to write two books, "History of the Song, Liao, Jin, and Yuan Dynasties" and "History of the Ming and Qing Dynasties". The historical materials in both books have been excerpted, but unfortunately he has been unable to complete the manuscript. At 14:00 pm on November 25, 2012, we invite everyone to come to Qian Mu’s former residence to read "History of the Sui, Tang and Five Dynasties".
