Mr. Lu Simian (1884-1957) was an important historian and educator in modern China. He is rigorous in his studies and has read the Twenty-Four Histories many times, but he is not satisfied with the textual research of Qianjia and Jia, but is committed to mastering them. He advocated that learning should be combined with reality, and opposed learning for the sake of learning, but he stayed away from politics and remained indifferent all his life. He once stated: "I have set up my own life and always follow the ancient sages and bureaucrats as a model", but he also said that he "deeply admires" Marxism-Leninism. However, as we all know, Mr. Lu is undoubtedly a scholar who is recognized as diligent, honest and well-known. Therefore, these seemingly tortuous thinking and attitudes above actually not only reflect a specific context of the times, but also demonstrate a transcendent life model.
Mr. Lu Simian has always paid close attention to issues in modern history. On the one hand, he once pointed out in terms of academic theory: "Historical events have caused each other before and after, and they are all related to each other. If you want to forcefully separate them, it is like cutting off the flow with a knife, but you cannot cut off one thing... However, it is difficult to find out the truth of things, and people's Knowledge is limited, and within the reach of ordinary people's consciousness, causes and effects cannot be separated from each other. However, it is not impossible to collect and study things that we think are directly related to the present. The so-called modern history, its Such is the meaning." On the other hand, in that era, "modern history" was a matter of "life and death". Just as the teacher said: "The period we are living in now, the events of this period are described, this is the so-called modern history. It can be divided into two periods: one from the arrival of the Europeans from the east to the end of the competition between various countries in the late Qing Dynasty to determine the sphere of influence. , this is the era when China is oppressed by external forces; from the 1898 Revolution to the present, this is the era when China is oppressed by external forces and reacts."
Mr. Lu Simian has published several brief works, including "Lecture Notes on Modern Chinese History", "Prehistory of Modern China", "Introduction to the History of China in the Past Hundred Years", "The Russo-Japanese War", "Supplement to the Cultural History of Modern China", " "Explanation of Modern History" are now included in the thirteenth volume of "The Complete Works of Lu Simian".
