Mr. Lu Simian (1884-1957) was an important historian and educator in modern China. He is rigorous in his studies and has read the Twenty-Four Histories many times, but he is not satisfied with the textual research of Qianjia and Jia, but is committed to mastering them. He advocated that learning should be combined with reality, and opposed learning for the sake of learning, but he stayed away from politics and remained indifferent all his life. He once stated: "I have set up my own life and always follow the ancient sages and bureaucrats as a model", but he also said that he "deeply admires" Marxism-Leninism. However, as we all know, Mr. Lu is undoubtedly a scholar who is recognized as diligent, honest and well-known. Therefore, these seemingly tortuous thinking and attitudes above actually not only reflect a specific context of the times, but also demonstrate a transcendent life model.
In 1940, Mr. Lu Simian's "General History of China" and Mr. Qian Mu's "Outline of National History" were published one after another. At that time, Shi Jiatong Shuye wrote an article on his reading experience. He said, "Lu Zhu is good at describing social culture, while Qian Zhu is good at understanding the general trend of national history." Indeed, as soon as we turn to this month's theme: "Chinese Social History", we can understand how much attainments and profound insights Mr. Lu has in social and cultural history. This book discusses the economy (agriculture, industry and commerce, property, coins), people's livelihood (food, clothing, palaces), society (marriage, clan, class), politics (state system, government system, household registration, taxes, levies, officialdom, elections, Military system), law (criminal law) and other aspects.
In fact, Mr. Lu Simian began compiling this "Chinese Social History" as early as the 1920s. It was originally a lecture prepared by Mr. Wang for the history courses of Hujiang University and Guanghua University. It was named "Outline of the National Heritage" and "New Meaning of the National Heritage" when it was first published. It was once renamed "Lecture Notes on Political and Economic Stories". Later, after a more systematic revision and expansion, it was renamed. Under the background of the times, this book has gone through many deletions, changes, and name changes. Through the unremitting efforts of the editors, it was not until the publication of "The Complete Works of Lu Simian" in 2015 that it finally received the greatest degree of completion and revision.
Mr. Lu Simian once talked about his views on social history. He said: "In fact, politics is only a superficial matter. Political activities are all based on society. Society, behind politics, has done countless bigger and more profound things. Fundamental things. If you don’t understand society, you can never understand politics.” At 14:00 on April 27, 113, we invite everyone to come to Qian Mu’s former residence to study together. Under the guidance of teacher Fu Kechang, we will see how Mr. Lu has a historical perspective on "social history" and the reasons why he holds such a belief. with deep meaning.
