Mr. Lu Simian (1884-1957) is an important historian and educator in modern China. He is rigorous in his studies and has read the Twenty-Four Histories many times. However, he is not satisfied with the textual research of Qian and Jiaqing, but is committed to integrating them. He advocated that learning should be combined with reality and opposed academics for academics' sake. However, he stayed away from politics and remained indifferent throughout his life. He once said to himself: "I always follow the example of ancient sages and officials in my conduct," but he also said that he was "deeply convinced" of Marxism-Leninism. However, as we all know, Mr. Lu is diligent and honest in his studies and is undoubtedly a scholar in his own right. Therefore, the above-mentioned seemingly tortuous thoughts and attitudes actually not only reflect a specific context of the times, but also demonstrate a transcendent life model.

"Neo-Confucianism" is a discipline that has a profound connection with our thoughts and culture, and its influence is still felt today. However, few people have an objective understanding of this knowledge that is closely integrated with society and life. On the one hand, this is because of the vast content of Neo-Confucianism; on the other hand, many labels and stereotypes also cover up the true appearance of Neo-Confucianism.

From 1925 to 1926, Mr. Lu Simian taught "History of Chinese Philosophy" at Hujiang University in Shanghai. The lecture notes compiled at that time were revised and supplemented and published in 1931 by the Shanghai Commercial Press as a book called "Outline of Neo-Confucianism". Mr. Lu pointed out in the book that Neo-Confucianism is different from philosophy. It is a practical knowledge, and its characteristic is subtlety and thoroughness. Although it has its limitations and shortcomings, its essence and contribution cannot be ignored, and its profound influence on thought and culture is indelible. In his later years, he commented on this book and said: "The modern works on Neo-Confucianism have many different words, but this book claims to be able to get the truth. However, it only touches on philosophy and fails to cover the political and social aspects of Neo-Confucianism." (Note: that is, shortcoming).

This book is now included in the 16 volumes of "The Complete Works". Mr. Lu describes the important doctrines of the Neo-Confucian schools and the inheritance and overlap of their thoughts in a balanced way, so that readers can understand the traces of academic evolution and the program of Neo-Confucianism. At 14:00 pm on October 26, 2013, we invite everyone to come to the classroom and read the "Outline of Neo-Confucianism" in depth with Mr. Fu Kechang to see how Mr. Lu elaborates on the essentials of Neo-Confucianism, and his views are similar to Mr. Qian Mu's views on Neo-Confucianism. What are the similarities and differences?
