Mr. Lu Simian (1884-1957) was an important historian and educator in modern China. He was rigorous in his academic research and read the Twenty-Four Histories many times, but he was not satisfied with the Qianlong and Jiaqing textual research, but was committed to integrating it into his own thinking. He advocated that learning should be combined with reality and opposed academic pursuit for the sake of academic pursuit. However, he stayed away from politics and lived a simple life. He once said: "In conducting myself, I always take the ancient sages and scholars as my role models", but he also said that he was "deeply convinced" of Marxism-Leninism. However, it is well known that Mr. Lu is diligent and honest in his studies and is undoubtedly a scholar with his own unique ideas. Therefore, these seemingly tortuous thoughts and attitudes mentioned above actually reflect a specific context of the times and also demonstrate a transcendent life type.

The book "Collected Essays on Academics" contains a total of 266 articles of Mr. Lu's various papers, including both academic manuscripts and current affairs articles. Mr. Lu is a pure scholar who has never participated in actual political activities in his life, but he is extremely concerned about real issues such as social development and people's livelihood, and he always has this concern in his words and deeds. Therefore, Mr. Wang's academic articles often have a strong sense of reality, and the current affairs he writes are also based on historical events and academic theories, which can be said to be the true nature of a scholar. The prefaces, postscripts, autobiography, travel notes and other essays included in this book not only reveal his approach to scholarship and his purpose in dealing with people and things, but are also important sources for understanding Mr. Lu's ideological evolution and life experiences.

For today's readers, "Collection of Essays on Academics" may be more interesting to read. "Spies Thousands of Years Ago" and "Grain Prices in the Four Histories" can satisfy the curiosity of reading history; "How to Root Out Corruption" and "On Real Estate Tax" are issues that are still encountered in contemporary times; "People's Life in the Occupied Areas" and "Occassional Memories of Prices" give us a glimpse of the times; "Summary of the Study of the Three Antis and Ideological Reform" is Mr. Lu's self-narrated biography. As for the various specific reading methods, they are based on Mr. Lu's own academic experience. Most of them are practical, simple but not crude, and can be called the "door to the door and the ladder to the ladder" in academic research.

At 14:00 on April 26, 2015, we invite everyone to come to the classroom and read "Collection of Academic Essays" with Professor Fu Kechang. Through Mr. Lu Simian's manuscripts, we can appreciate a scholar's attitude towards academic research and his concern for the times, and think about how academic research can be integrated with reality and how history can illuminate the present.
