Guan Zhong, Yan Ying. Even if we look at the famous ministers of the past dynasties, these two wise ministers are still the first-class figures, and Confucius once praised their talents and virtues. "Historical Records" places their joint biography after "Biography of Boyi" as the second chapter of "Biography", which shows that Tai Shigong respected them. However, what is interesting is that in order to write down the biographies of these two outstanding men through the ages, Tai Shigong hardly talked about their policies and political achievements, but only recorded a few short stories about them. Tai Shigong himself said that these two gentlemen have been recorded in detail in various other books, so he "ignored them and discussed their anecdotes."

Mr. Qian Mu pointed out that this is because the most important thing about Chinese history is that it attaches more importance to "people" than "things." The teacher said: "The biographies of Guan Yan are all about the major events of Qi State, and only three sections of the anecdotes of Guan Yan and the two men are recounted, not to describe his events in detail, but to get to know the person. Any career of his person will be discussed. Build a foundation from trivial matters such as these. This is the essence of Chinese cultural tradition. ... (Original) This biography of Guan Yan is similar to a literary sketch, but it actually contains philosophical meanings. As a Chinese historian, he is not just a record. It’s just the past!” (Modern Chinese Academic Review. A Brief Discussion of Chinese History II)

On the other hand, careful readers can also find that in this biography, Tai Shigong especially praised the deep friendship between Guan Zhong and Bao Shuya, as well as the wise and virtuous scholar Yan Zi sold his horse to redeem the prisoner Yue Shifu. Tai Shigong even couldn't help but write that if Yan Ying were still alive, he would gladly drive his chariot for him! Why did Tai Shigong sigh? How should we understand the "philosophical meaning" mentioned by Mr. Qian?
