Mr. Lu Simian (1884-1957) was an important historian and educator in modern China. He is rigorous in his studies and has read the Twenty-Four Histories many times, but he is not satisfied with the textual research of Qianjia and Jia, but is committed to mastering them. He advocated that learning should be combined with reality, and opposed learning for the sake of learning, but he stayed away from politics and remained indifferent all his life. He once stated: "I have set up my own life and always follow the ancient sages and bureaucrats as a model", but he also said that he "deeply admires" Marxism-Leninism. However, as we all know, Mr. Lu is undoubtedly a scholar who is recognized as diligent, honest and well-known. Therefore, these seemingly tortuous thinking and attitudes above actually not only reflect a specific context of the times, but also demonstrate a transcendent life model.

This month’s theme book, "An Interpretation of Datong," originally titled "History of Chinese Social Changes," is a lecture notes given by Mr. Lu Simian at Guanghua University in 1933, written in classical Chinese. In order to make it easier for more readers to read, Mr. Lu rewrote the whole book into vernacular Chinese and finalized it in September 1934. The teacher believed that the changes in Chinese society since the Three Dynasties can be roughly divided into three major periods, which can be represented by the Datong, Xiaokang and Troubled Times mentioned by Confucius, so he changed the original title to "Explanation of Datong".

As Mr. Lu said in the preface, in order to save today's troubled times, we must first understand the current situation of society. And social changes are caused by each other. "To understand the present, we must trace its origins from the past." But in this book, Mr. Lu also focuses on elaborating his thoughts on "Datong". Therefore, this book not only presents his "historical philosophy" and "values", but also reflects the traditional scholar's "taking the world as his own responsibility" of compassion. At 14:00 pm on March 23, 2020, we invite everyone to visit Qian Mu’s former residence. Under the guidance of teacher Fu Kechang, we will see how Mr. Lu interprets the spirit of traditional history under modern issues and scholarship, as well as the hopes and beliefs he placed on it. .
